A short history
- The land around Da Nang once belonged to the Cham kingdom of Champa, founded in 192 AD. One of its capitals, Indrapura, sat about 50 km away and was the seat of power from roughly 875 to 1000 AD. 4
- European ships began calling in the 1500s; the Portuguese explorer António de Faria anchored here in 1535, and an American trader, John White, arrived in 1819. 4
- French warships shelled the port in 1847 and troops landed in 1858. Under French rule the town was called Tourane. 4
- During the Vietnam War its air base was described as one of the busiest airports in the world; that field is today's Da Nang International Airport. 4
- Da Nang split from Quảng Nam on 1 January 1997 to become a city run directly by the central government. 4 6 In June 2025 the National Assembly merged Da Nang City and Quảng Nam province into a new, larger Da Nang City, whose local government began work on 1 July 2025. 2 Hội An, which was in Quảng Nam, is now inside Da Nang. 3

Expat community
Expat.com estimates 10,000–15,000 foreign residents, mostly Korean, Chinese, American, Russian and Japanese (an unofficial estimate). 5 Vietnamese press reported more than 7 million foreigner temporary-stay registrations in Da Nang in 2025; that counts stays, not people living there. 12 U.S. News & World Report ranked Da Nang 4th of 12 Asian cities for retirement in 2024. 4
Healthcare
The U.S. Embassy lists Da Nang General Hospital and Da Nang C Hospital (public), Vinmec Da Nang International Hospital and Hoan My Da Nang Hospital (private), and Family Medical Practice Da Nang (international clinic). 13
The U.S. Embassy notes that care in Vietnam is generally below U.S. standards outside the big international hospitals, and that serious cases may need medical evacuation. 13 More on the healthcare page (coming soon).
Getting around
Da Nang International Airport is the country's third-largest international airport. 4 The city is a stop on the North–South railway, and the 6.28 km Hải Vân Tunnel links it toward Huế. 4 Grab ride-hailing operates here. 14
Safety
Central-coast storms: Da Nang's wettest months are October to December (see the weather table above). 4
Across Vietnam
- The U.S. State Department rates Vietnam Level 1, "exercise normal precautions" (advisory issued 24 June 2026; checked Oct 27, 2026 in a browser). It names two risks: petty crime in tourist areas, and landmines and unexploded ordnance, which it says are a low risk in urban and tourist areas. 15 OSAC's 2026 report, which we read, gives the same level. 16
- The crimes foreigners meet most are phone theft, pickpocketing and bag snatching by thieves on motorbikes; petty crime rises around Christmas and Tết. 16
- Traffic is the biggest danger: OSAC says road accidents are the leading cause of death, serious injury and medical evacuation for foreigners in Vietnam, and helmets are required on motorbikes. 16
- OSAC says the June–October monsoon brings flood and landslide risk; in 2025 the country had 11 typhoons and tropical depressions between May and October. 16
- Emergency numbers: 113 police, 114 fire, 115 ambulance. 17

Food
Try mì Quảng, the region's signature turmeric-noodle dish with shrimp, pork and peanuts; rice-paper rolls with boiled pork; and bánh xèo crêpes. Hàn Market and Cồn Market are the two main food markets, and street-food stalls line the river and the beach at night. 4
Beaches
Mỹ Khê and Non Nước are long sandy beaches with resorts and surfing. 4
Nature & culture
The Marble Mountains are five marble-and-limestone hills named after the five elements. 7 At their foot, Non Nước village carves stone, a craft on Vietnam's national intangible heritage list since 2014. 4 Bà Nà Hills is a mountain resort reached by a 5 km cable car to 1,487 m, and Sơn Trà Mountain offers streams and seaside resorts. 4
