A short history
- Under the Kingdom of Champa the area was called Kauthara. 2 The Po Nagar temple towers, founded before 781, honour the goddess of the land. 5
- From 1653 into the 1800s the area was thinly settled and wild. The French made Nha Trang an urban centre in 1924 and a town in 1937. 2
- The bacteriologist Alexandre Yersin lived here for nearly 50 years and founded what is now the Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang. 2 6
- In the late 1960s the U.S. Army's First Field Force, Vietnam, had its headquarters here. 2
- About 535,000 people lived in the city in 2023. On 1 July 2025 it stopped being a separate city when Vietnam removed its district level of government. 2

Expat community
Expat.com estimates 5,000–7,000 foreign residents, led by Russians, Chinese and South Koreans. 3 VnExpress cites about 4,000 long-term foreigners in the urban area. 4 Both are unofficial estimates and they disagree. Province police counted about 51,500 foreigners on temporary-stay registrations across Khánh Hòa in October 2025, mostly tourists, investors and workers. 7
Healthcare
The U.S. Embassy lists Khánh Hòa General Hospital (16 Yersin Street) and Saigon Nha Trang General Hospital. 8
The U.S. Embassy notes that care in Vietnam is generally below U.S. standards outside the big international hospitals, and that serious cases may need medical evacuation. 8 More on the healthcare page (coming soon).

Across Vietnam
- The U.S. State Department rates Vietnam Level 1, "exercise normal precautions" (advisory issued 24 June 2026; checked Oct 27, 2026 in a browser). It names two risks: petty crime in tourist areas, and landmines and unexploded ordnance, which it says are a low risk in urban and tourist areas. 10 OSAC's 2026 report, which we read, gives the same level. 11
- The crimes foreigners meet most are phone theft, pickpocketing and bag snatching by thieves on motorbikes; petty crime rises around Christmas and Tết. 11
- Traffic is the biggest danger: OSAC says road accidents are the leading cause of death, serious injury and medical evacuation for foreigners in Vietnam, and helmets are required on motorbikes. 11
- OSAC says the June–October monsoon brings flood and landslide risk; in 2025 the country had 11 typhoons and tropical depressions between May and October. 11
- Emergency numbers: 113 police, 114 fire, 115 ambulance. 12
