The short version
Medicare usually does not pay for care outside the U.S. In most cases you pay everything, and Medicare drug plans don't cover drugs bought abroad. 5 Some Medigap policies cover emergency care while traveling abroad. 5
The U.S. Embassy says care in Vietnam is generally below U.S. standards, and even routine injuries may need evacuation to a regional medical centre. 6 OSAC adds that hospitals often want cash up front and staff may speak little English; the State Department strongly advises medical-evacuation insurance. 7
Vietnam has 9 JCI-accredited facilities, according to a January 2026 news report on JCI's briefing to the Ministry of Health (we have not checked JCI's own list). 8

Home care
- bTaskee, a Vietnamese home-services app, lists in-home elderly care from 300,000 dong for a 2-hour visit and 800,000 dong for 8 hours; live-in care from 6,000,000 dong (5 days minimum); and monthly plans from 1,200,000 dong (2 hours a day for 1 month) up to 10,088,000 dong (8 hours a day for 3 months). These are its reference prices for one Ho Chi Minh City area; it says real prices change with area, weekends, peak hours and holidays, and that its care services run only in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Da Nang. Company prices, not official. 10
- Full-time live-in elderly caregiver in Ho Chi Minh City: two agency price lists show about 8–10 million dong a month (roughly US$310–390), up to 14 million for heavier care, paid to the caregiver; you also give room and board, and the agency charges a one-time placement fee (one lists 3 million dong). 11 12 These are company prices, not official data; we found no such price lists for other cities. US$ figures use the Vietcombank rate. 9
Before you go
- CDC recommends hepatitis A, hepatitis B and typhoid vaccines for most travelers, and Japanese encephalitis vaccine for people moving there to live; no yellow fever vaccine is required. 13
- CDC lists Vietnam at Level 1 for dengue (updated 3 Sep 2026) and says there is no malaria risk in the cities of Da Nang, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang. 13
- Some common U.S. medicines may not be sold in Vietnam: bring enough for your stay with a copy of the prescription, and check with Vietnam's Ministry of Health that each one is allowed in. 7
- Emergency: dial 115 for an ambulance. 6
